California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA):
Verwey-Hanford Dairy Digester Project, Kings County
Formed in 1992, Earth First Construction is a Santa Barbara based, California public benefit 501(c)3 educational corporation. As part of our educational mission, we have been receiving grants from the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and Strategic Growth Council to hold Technical Assistance workshops for farm, dairy and livestock operators who are seeking grant funding.
Some of our Technical Assistance workshops include: SWEEP grants (State Water Efficiency and Enhancement Program), Healthy Soil Program (HSP) grants and the Alternative Manure Management Program (AMMP) grants.
Our mission is to directly support and be a part of the growing worldwide movement towards sustainable living, and to assist in this transition by doing research into sustainability at the individual, community and global levels.
From this research we present educational workshops bringing together leading experts who are currently implementing various types of solutions relevant to farm, dairy and livestock operators of all sizes.

Water Expert
Bioguard Industries, Inc. develops new water treatment technologies to enhance water for human and animal consumption and plant growth.
“An increase of almost 13% in protein (of Urth-treated alfalfa) is rather substantial. Purchased protein is one of the livestock feeder’s biggest expenses and doing that without sacrificing energy levels in the feed is very good.
This will reflect a higher relative feed value and ultimately more production from the feedstuff. The RFV of this treated hay is 7% higher on the untreated hay…a top producing dairy will almost always want a feed with higher RFV for the production herd.”
“The green bedding in the Chosen Acres program is outstanding. My cows love it. Their respiratory problems are gone. I’m saving money and time not having to buy and haul sawdust. I’m making money selling extra bedding. It makes my manure management better and easier.”
“I was the point person for a response to the California Energy Commission’s GFO-15-605 Hydrogen Light Duty Infrastructure grant. I can only say good things about Grant Management Associates. Kristin, Ed and Danielle knew this was my first venture into grants, and as Kristin stated, “it was a monster”. Truer words were never spoken. With GMA’s help, this complex RFP was done on time and within budget. I totally recommend GMA to any company or public agency looking for help in grant writing. It was a pleasure to work with them from beginning to end. Please call me at (559)285-8727 if you would like to speak to me about their work ethic.”
“Reduced odors, no crust, decreased sludge in the pit allowed for complete pit evacuation for the first time.” Using Urth Ag products.
“The day I made the changes in my parlor as part of the Chosen Acres program, my cows were happier. Now my SCC is less than 75,000, my preg rates are way up and I rarely have a cow in sick bay.”
“Kristin Carter recently led a grant writing workshop for the Delta Conservancy group. As a participant I appreciated her generosity of time and expertise. She shared extensive knowledge about the process of finding, applying for and managing state and federal grants. The Center for Land-Based Learning has managed these kinds grants before, but I am fairly new to this work, so this was especially useful for me. Clearly speaking from years of experience, she shared her insights on the way things actually go, the kind of information that first time applicants will not know by reading the RFP or even the entire agency website.”
“The other noticeable difference is the higher calcium level and the lower potassium level in the treated hay. This a better balanced hay as far as the mineral content. The producer using untreated hay would probably spend more money to balance the mineral levels in the ration.” [Urth Ag]
“Grant Management Associates is our ‘go-to’ source to assist our clients for funding strategies, grant opportunities, and grant writing services. They have the experience and depth of service necessary in this very competitive financial environment.”
“The Chosen Acres non-GMO diet has contributed to my herd health – and I’m saving $1.55 per cow per day.”
900 cows, farms 2,000+ acres; expanding – just bought 600 more acres
“I have successfully collaborated with Kristen Cooper Carter and other Grant Management Associates (GMA) consultants for about five years on a variety of research funding, grant and contract management, and program evaluation applications. During this time, I have come to greatly appreciate the individual and collective diversity and depth of expertise demonstrated by GMA’s professional associates. They are outcome driven and produce results.”
I have had the greatest pleasure of knowing Dr. Richard Wullaert from 1994. Dr. Wullaert was a consultant to SAIC, specializing in functional electrolyzed water and I was a business entrepreneur just getting into the field of functional electrolyzed water. After spending a day and half with Dr. Wullaert in Santa Barbara, for the first time, I got an understanding of the business I was in with functional electrolyzed water. Since then, we have maintained a very close working relationship to go on to co-develop several critical applications surrounding functional electrolyzed water. Some of the applications involved were hand disinfecting, grape growing, alcohol aging, precious metals processing, a series of nutraceutical products and de-scaling of cooling towers. Had I not come to know Dr. Wullaert, I probably would not have stayed involved in this field for 24 years.
“GMA has really come through for us! Ed, Rande and Kristin, thank you all so much for your hard work and patience down to the wire assembling all of our knowledge and distilling it into a few pages, which aligned us around what needs to be done and enabled us to communicate it better than we’ve ever been able to before.”
“Bioguard Industries, Inc. delivered everything they promised. Our water is the safest and best tasting water in town.”
